DIY Fruit and Vegetable Wash

Fruit and Vegetable WashA couple of weeks ago, we were at the store and I saw a produce wash that I was SO close to purchasing. Our cart was filled with produce in a rainbow of colors and I knew that a quick wash definitely wasn’t going to cut it. Then I looked at the ingredients. And the price. And it quickly found it’s way back on the shelf.

Not only was it filled with tons of unnecessary ingredients, but it was crazy expensive as well. So I decided it was time for me to make my own fruit and vegetable wash. (Be sure to check out these other natural living ideas, too.)

Fruit and Vegetable Wash

There are a ton of different homemade methods to clean your fruits and vegetables. Most include some version or combination of the following ingredients:

  • Water
  • Vinegar (white or apple cider)
  • Lemon Juice
  • Baking Soda
  • Salt
  • Grapefruit Seed Extract

Not only that, but some are for soaking while some are for spritzing on and rinsing off. Depending on your needs and the ingredients that you have on hand, one may be a better fit for you. While I decided that the spray was best for our needs, I’ll also include a super easy soak that you can do. It’s especially helpful if you’re doing bigger batches of fruits and vegetables.

For The Fruit and Vegetable Wash Spray

Fruit and Vegetable Wash Spray
An easy fruit and vegetable wash,
Ingredients
  • 8 oz Spray Bottle
  • 3/4 Cup Water
  • 1 Tbsp Lemon Juice
  • 1 Tbsp Baking Soda
Instructions
  1. Combine the water and the lemon juice in the bottle.
  2. Pour in the baking soda and quickly cap to prevent foam from overflowing.
  3. Shake until baking soda has dissolved.
  4. Spritz on your fruits and vegetables. Let sit for five minutes.
  5. Rinse clean and pat dry.

For The Fruit and Vegetable Wash Soak

For the soak, all you need is 3 parts water to 1 part vinegar. Soak for 10 minutes, rinse and pat dry. And if you’re washing a variety of fruits and vegetables, it’s usually best to soak different kinds separately.

Tips for Both Fruit and Vegetable Washes

Try to keep the water as close to the same temperature as the fruit and vegetables as possible. Always use a freshly cleaned sink or a large mixing bowl to prevent further contamination.

Easy peasy, right? There’s no reason not to make your own fruit and vegetable wash now. And for me, it definitely does more than the quick rinse method I used to use. I saw a lot more dirt and other particles at the bottom of the mixing bowl than I’d ever like to see.
