One of the things I hate most in life is diaper rash. I know it can’t feel good. And when Lily was younger, I hated putting the store bought creams on her bum. I felt like there were waaaay too many ingredients that had no purpose or couldn’t easily be pronounced. I don’t like using products like that for myself so I especially don’t like using them for her.

So I did some digging in hopes to switch to a DIY diaper rash cream. I saw SO many natural diaper rash remedies and realized I could make my own. I just had to figure out what worked best for our peanut. The great thing about homemade diaper rash cream is that it can be made mostly with things from your pantry. And when I created my DIY diaper rash cream, I did a lot of digging to figure out the perfect ingredients.

But before I get into the recipe, let’s talk a little bit about what you can do to prevent diaper rash. As much as I’m all for you making this homemade diaper rash cream recipe yourself, I’d prefer you and your little one to not have to use it!

Ways to prevent diaper rash

Diapers: Change diapers frequently and ensure that they are properly fitted for your little one. Choose high quality diapers, such as Huggies Snug & Dry, that absorb faster and provide up to 12 hours of protection.

Diet Change: If your little one is starting to eat solids or going through a different change in diet, pay extra attention to soiled diapers. Acidity changes in bowel movements and extended sitting in a soiled diaper (before learning to walk) can lead to increased diaper rash. Antibiotics can also affect this as well (a lesson I would have loved to not have learned when I had mastitis.)

Clean Thoroughly: Make sure your tiny human is extra clean during diaper changes with wipes like Huggies One & Done Refreshing Wipes. These baby wipes are thicker and textured to grab more of the mess when you’re cleaning your baby.

DIY Diaper Rash Cream

So there are a ton of ingredients that can work for natural diaper rash remedies. It all depends on your little one. What works on our peanut may not work with your little one depending on skin sensitivities, allergies, etc. But this one is fairly mild in terms of ingredients so I think it’s a good starting point if you need to make adjustments!

Why these ingredients work for a homemade diaper rash cream:

Oatmeal: Oatmeal is soothing and has strong anti-inflammatory properties. Because of these qualities, it’s great for aiding in the relief of skin irritations and inflammation.

Coconut Oil: Not only is coconut oil antimicrobial and antiviral, it also has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. (What doesn’t it do?!) Coconut oil contains lauric acid (also found in breast milk) which is fantastic for battling bacterial and fungal problems.

Aloe Vera: Aloe vera is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anti-fungal. Not only is it a rockstar when it comes to helping skin heal, it’s incredibly soothing and reduces itchiness/redness.

Lavender Essential Oil: Essential oils are great for healing, but lavender essential oil is one of my favorites. With anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antiseptic properties – it’s kind of an all in one healing aid. Plus it’s considered safe for babies.
