Honeymoon Island Dog Beach is the perfect family beach for a day trip spent by the water or an evening spent watching the sun set.

When you go to Florida, you go to the beach. Right? That’s pretty much always the first thing on our “must-do when we travel to FL” list. But because we had Sookie with us this past February, we couldn’t just go to any beach.

So we set out to find a nearby dog beach. Family had recommended we visit Honeymoon Island numerous times on previous visits so when we found out they had a dog beach, it was the winner.

And it did not disappoint!

We saw some mixed reviews online, but figured it was worth visiting at least once. We absolutely loved it! it was so much fun we went back for Valentine’s Day since we had zero plans.

About Honeymoon Island State Park:

Between the main beach and the pet beach at the South end, Honeymoon Island State Park boasts approximately four miles of shoreline. Perfect for:

  • Swimming
  • Shelling
  • Walking
  • Bicycling
  • Canoeing
  • Kayaking
  • Surfing
  • Picnicking
  • Wildlife Viewing
  • and more!

Plus there’s a cafe and showers near the main beach that everyone has access to, even if you’re using the dog beach.

Know Before You Go to the Dog Beach:

  • Pets must be on a 6 foot hand held leash at all times
  • There is a dog wash available
  • Plenty of room for picnics and/or sun tents

Tip on quicker access from Jan on BringFidoThe quickest way to the beach is to park at the main carpark and then take the trail to the left of the cafe/toilet building.

Honeymoon Island Dog Beach is truly perfect for the whole family. Plenty of space, shallow and deep water, clean sandy beach, and lots of walking space. Everyone we came across was super friendly and other than maybe one or two people, everyone maintained control of their pups. We saw people kayaking, canoeing, and fishing right from the beach so there wasn’t a shortage of things to do.

This was Sookie’s and Lily’s first trip to the ocean and they both had a blast. Both were beat at the end of the day which made for some more relaxing evenings for us ;)

We also had a beautiful sunset viewing spot on Valentine’s Day, making it the best Valentine’s Day we’ve had to date. The beach clears out pretty quickly at night so we had nearly private viewing for the four of us.

We weren’t sure if we’d get a good view of it or not with the location. The pictures are proof that we had nothing to worry about.

Hours: 8AM until sundown

Price: $8 /car 2-8 occupants or $4 single occupant

Pros: Huge beach so it never felt crowded, poop bags and disposal easy to find, plenty of parking, dog wash area, sandy beach for the most part, great sunset viewing, very friendly staff at the entrance who guided us where to go (and gave us a dog treat)

Cons: Long walk to get to the beach (see the tip for how to fix this!), far away from bathrooms
