Doughnuts are so delicious that we get to celebrate their existence, not once, but twice a year!  That’s right. National Doughnut Day occurs on June 5th and, today, November 5th!  Usually, doughnut chains give away a free doughnut to celebration this delicious occasion, but it’s actually really easy to bake up your own doughnut treats using a box of cake mix!

I made this recipe for the first time a few years ago while having a baking night with a friend at her apartment.  It was around Christmastime and we were baking up all sorts of holiday cookies to share with friends and family.  In order to keep ourselves out of the cookies, we made ourselves another sweet treat to enjoy while we baked.  With a box of yellow cake mix at the ready, we whipped up a big batch of these incredibly easy doughnut holes.

The return of Fall and the chill in the air always puts me back into baking mode.  The truth is, I tend to enjoy baking more than I enjoy eating these sweet creations.  Usually I bake up goodies for my husband, but doughnuts are one sweet treat I’ll never pass up!  So I decided to break out this doughnut hole recipe again recently and bake up a batch.

Since I had some caramel candies left over from making Caramel Apple Bars, I decided to fill some of these doughnut holes with a gooey, caramel center. If you decide to add caramel filling to your doughnut holes, all you need to do is cut a caramel candy in half.  After filling the pan with cake mix, push a candy into the center of the batter and bake!
