Easy Homemade Water Based Cleaner

In our transition into self-sufficient living, one of the first things I wanted to tackle was our household cleaning supplies. This led to the nearly exclusive use of this easy homemade water based cleaner in our household.

When we bought our couch, we had no idea how to clean it. (Fail on our part, right?) So I ended up digging under all of the cushions to find out what type of cleaner it needed and it turns out it needed a W cleaner, which stands for water based. So I did some research, created a spray that would do the trick, and life went on. Then one day I couldn’t find our bathroom cleaner so I used the couch spray and it worked like magic. No harmful chemicals that led to a coughing fit and it cleaned up the toilet, sink, mirror and tub even better than our regular cleaner.

This was the start of a beautiful relationship where this spray became the main cleaner in our household.

The list is pretty much never-ending for what this works on, but some of my favorites include:

  • Microfiber couches (make sure it needs a water-based solvent though!)
  • Windows
  • Toilets
  • Shower stalls
  • Bath tubs
  • Counters
  • Stovetops
  • Microwaves
  • Mirrors
  • Carpets

And so much more. But, I haven’t even shared the best part yet which is how easy it is!

Ingredients

We always have the ingredients in our house so there’s never a reason not to make it. The four ingredients you’ll need to create this awesome easy homemade water based cleaner are:

  • Water
  • 1 Tbsp Vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp Baking Soda
  • 1 Tsp Dish Soap

Bonus Ingredient: If you’re using it on things like your bathroom or kitchen, it doesn’t hurt to add a couple drops of essential oil (especially lemon!) to help with the disinfecting process and make your house smell great while cleaning. I’d be careful about using it on fabric, carpet or upholstery with the essential oils though as it could potentially leave an oil stain.

Directions

Fill your spray bottle approximately 3/4 full and mix in the rest of the ingredients in. Shake thoroughly.

That’s it. Easy, right? Not only is it super easy, but it’s so cheaper and way better for you and your entire household. I’d love to hear what you use this cleaner on if you try it out!
