Get ready for your next Halloween party with this easy to make Halloween Piñata DIY! Fill it with your favorite candy and have fun with the whole family!I think I’ve made it pretty clear by now that I love Halloween. Like a lot. As soon as September is coming to an end, Nathan has to prepare for the glitterpocalypse and another world war in our kitchen for the next three months. Between Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas – I get a little creative. And messy. And really hungry.

So what matter way to celebrate the upcoming holiday than by combining all three with this Halloween Piñata DIY?

Get ready for your next Halloween party with this easy to make Halloween Piñata DIY! Fill it with your favorite candy and have fun with the whole family!A few tips before I get into the how-to:

Take your time. This is not a half hour and done project. You need some time in between layers of paper to dry. And then you need even more time at the end for the full thing to dry. You can use a fan to help speed up the process, but I’d recommend giving yourself a couple days to make this. So if you’re wanting to make one for your Halloween party, get started soon!

Have something to tie it up on. Who would have thought that newspaper and a balloon would feel like a sack of flour when you’re trying to hold it up and attach newspaper or crepe paper to it? Not me. If you can, have something to tie it up on so you can just spin it, attach things and not strain your arms in the process.

SUPPLIES

  • Balloon
  • Newspaper, cut into 2-3″ wide strips
  • Flour
  • Water
  • Crepe Paper/streamers, whatever colors you’d like to decorate the piñata with
  • Tacky Glue
  • String/rope/ribbon
  • Scissors

STEPS | For the paper mache

  1. Blow up the balloon to the desired size and tie it off. If you’re hanging it up to do the rest of the project: Attach some string to the balloon knot and tie it up.
  2. Mix together 1 part flour to 1 part water in a bowl with a spoon or popsicle stick. I used a cup of each, but depending on the size of your balloon, you may need more or less. It should be paste like and mostly smooth.
  3. Dip a newspaper strip in the mixture and wipe off any excess. Spread over the balloon and smooth.
  4. Dip another newspaper strip in the mixture and wipe off any excess. Spread over the balloon, slightly overlapping the initial piece.
  5. Repeat steps 3-4 until the entire balloon (except for an opening by the balloon knot) is covered.
  6. Wait for it to dry and repeat until you have 2-3 layers total.

STEPS | For the streamers/crepe paper

  1. Once all of the newspaper is dry, you’ll cover it with the streamers/crepe paper. Start as low as you can (you can fill in the way bottom of the balloon later) with the Tacky Glue and draw a thin line around the balloon (as straight as possible.) Press the top of the streamer along that glue line to attach it. The bottom of it will be left unattached so you can cut a fringe along it.
  2. Continue with a thin glue line, wrapping around the ballon and slowly moving up. Each glue line should be within a 1/2″ of the next one to overlap the crepe paper so the fringe covers the entire balloon. Feel free to alternate colors as you go like I did.
  3. Continue gluing and wrapping the streamer/crepe paper around the balloon until you’re to the top where the knot is. If you didn’t cover the entire bottom of the ballon in step 7, glue streamer/crepe paper over the bottom. I didn’t do a fringe here, but you can if you’d like!
  4. Now cut the fringe. I didn’t do any measuring or anything with this – I just snipped each layer repeatedly to create it. Just go around the whole balloon, one layer at a time, snipping and “fluffing” to get the layers away from the balloon.
  5. Wait for it to dry completely.

STEPS | For the final part of the piñata

  1. Now that everything has dried, you can pop the ballon and remove it.
  2. Once you’ve removed the balloon, cut the hole where the balloon knot was to be big enough for you to fill it with candy (if it’s not big enough already.)
  3. Poke a hole on two sides of the hole (about an inch away from the hole) to put string, rope or ribbon through. Pull the string through both holes and tie it in a knot so you can easily hang it.
  4. Fill with candy about 3/4 full.

And for the final step:

Have fun destroying it!
