Did you know that homemade dish soap is ridiculously easy to make? This easy to follow recipe will help you make your own in no time!

When I shared the easy Citrus Infused Vinegar DIY last week, I talked about how we’re even more cautious when it comes to the chemicals we use in our home. We tried to be eco-friendly before, but when Lily entered our lives – we knew we had to step it up a notch. So I started going back to some of my old mainstays for cleaners, including this homemade dish soap DIY. Not only is it super easy to make, but it works great as well!

But before I get into how to make it, I want to talk about how I get the most out of it by pairing it with the right kinds of sponges. Scotch-Brite® really has the right tool for every surface. The green Scotch-Brite® Heavy Duty Scrub Sponge is a must in our cleaning arsenal because it’s so universal. You can use it on pots, pans, oven racks, tools, tires, sinks and more. It’s the perfect sponge for nearly all of your cleaning needs. The green Scotch-Brite® Heavy Duty Soap Dispensing Dishwand is another great option for tough dishes that need some extra scrubbing, too.

If I’m looking for something a little lighter, I opt for the blue Scotch-Brite® Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge that cleans without scratching and is safe for non-stick cookware. It’s also great for counter tops, cook tops, tubs, shower tiles, windows, and more.

These sponges make cleaning super simple, especially when you pair it with this homemade dish soap. With just the right amount of suds and the perfect scrubbing tool, clean dishes are easy to come by!

This homemade dish soap recipe is super simple to make whether you want to make a big or a small batch. It’s not filled with unnecessary chemicals and doesn’t break the bank when you make it, either. Eco-friendly, inexpensive, easy to make and useful? That’s a BIG win for me!

Now, you can use any essential oils you’d like but if you’re looking for beneficial dish cleaning properties – I’d highly recommend lemon or orange. Lemon has antibacterial and antiviral properties while orange is tough on grease. Other great options include:

  • Eucalyptus : fights germs
  • Lavender : fights bacteria
  • Tea Tree : fights bacteria and viruses
  • Peppermint : fights bacteria
  • Cinnamon : fights bacteria

Also, if you feel the mixture is too thick, add more water just a little bit at a time. Too much will thin the mixture out and prevent it from cleaning as well, but depending on the type of soap flakes and washing soda you use – your mixture may end up thicker than you’d like.
