Introduction to Essential Oils

 What are essential oils?

Essential oils are liquids that come from elements from a plant. It can be found in leaves, stems, bark, roots, flowers and more. Essential oils are very much so the true essence of the plant which makes them very concentrated.

How are essential oils and fragrance oils different?

Fragrance oils are artificially made while essential oils are derived from plants. Fragrance oils are artificially created to mimic the scent of a substance (ie: a pineapple, coffee, etc.) There are over 3000 materials that are approved for fragrance oils which includes aroma chemicals, essential oils and essential oil components. Fragrance oils also do not offer the therapeutic benefits that essential oils do.

How can I use essential oils?

For a complete overview of aromatherapy and how to dilute essential oils, check out last week’s post Introduction to Aromatherapy.

Are different essential oils better for different moods?

Absolutely! There are many different essential oils, most of which have specific moods that they are better suited to treat and improve. While the list below isn’t all-inclusive, it covers a common moods and common essential oils that are regularly used in aromatherapy.

The information provided in this post is for educational purposes only – I’m not a doctor and am only sharing what I have learned over the years. This information is not intended to treat, cure, prevent or, diagnose any disease or condition nor is it intended to prescribe in any way. When using essential oils, never use them undiluted. Do not take internally unless working with a qualified and expert practitioner and keep away from pets and children. If you’re applying an essential oil to your skin, always perform a small patch test to a less sensitive part of the body after you have properly diluted the oil in an appropriate carrier oil.
