Loving Yourself Enough to Walk Away

Loving Yourself Enough to Walk Away

Life is all about relationships, the good and the bad. We all dream of great relationships where we click, ones where we know the person will be with us until the end.

But what happens when you realize that person and you aren’t going to work out (and I’m not just talking romantic relationships, I’m talking about friendships too). If you’re like me, it’s hard to let things go, I just want to pour everything I have into fixing it.

Sadly, life doesn’t work that way, and when you realize that it’s better to be without this person, here’s a few tips to help you.

Remember You Have to Take Care of You – I’ve battled with depression for a long time, and I’ve realized, some people can make that depression a lot worse, whether it’s their own battle with depression, or just a nasty attitude. When it gets to that point that being around that person just messes with you, you need to leave. Remember, you have the power to decide what happens in your life and you have the power to decide who is in your life.

Be Classy About It – Originally, I wrote “Be Nice About it” but no matter how you do this, you’re risking someone deciding they hate you for it. At one point, I remember telling a former friend that I wished her well and hope she got everything she wanted – and I truly meant it. I knew she had been through a lot and I wanted her life to get better, but when I told her that, she called me a not so nice word. Just remember, you can’t control how someone reacts, you can only control your reaction.

Give Yourself Time to Grieve After – Even if this is your choice, it still has heartbreaking consequences. You may feel relieved for a brief moment, only to realize that the good memories will never happen again. It’s okay to be sad, but remember to remind yourself this is for the best.

Being able to walk away from someone is hard, especially when they don’t understand why, but if you feel like this is something you need to do, think about it, and if you really decide you need to walk away, walk away.

Have you ever had to walk away from someone that just wasn’t good for you anymore?
