Why I Chose Self-Employment

Why I Chose Self-EmploymentI’ve been self-employed for awhile now, but there are moments at least once a week that remind me truly why I chose this journey. Moments that fill me with never-ending gratitude for the life that I live and moments that make me wonder when I’ll wake up from this dream. There are plenty of moments that leave me wanting to pull my hair out as well. Fortunately, these are much less common.

The simple reason I chose self-employment is flexibility.

The complex answer is because I need change to function as much as a payphone d0es. Corporate jobs didn’t provide that and it left me bored, depressed, and living for the weekend when I could get away from it all. For those that loathe their jobs as much as I did, you know that feeling can be unrelenting and unbearable.

Always waiting for Friday to come around. Always dreading the Sunday evening lull that reminded you that work wasn’t too far away. Always counting down the hours until the end of the day when you could walk away from your desk and forget about your troubles even temporarily.

And then when the weekend, or even the weeknights came, I was too exhausted to do anything remotely fun or productive. My tank was on empty and all I wanted to do was not be at work. My passions were endless and yet I had zero energy to indulge in them. Until I found self-employment.

Self-employment gave me that ability to keep an ever-changing flexible schedule.

I had day dates with Nathan that brought us closer together and created a bond that I could never dream of when I was working a corporate job.

I indulged in some of my favorite things (like reading magazines, a glass of wine, or my favorite chocolate) and actually took the time to truly enjoy it.

I was there for all of the important events in life for myself and my loved ones, never having to regret what I missed because work just got in the way.

I traveled for weeks at a time and actually forgot about work for a little while instead of getting a select week off where I spent it dreading going back

The list is endless.

Wente Wine

Self-employment has filled my life with so many dreams that, for years, I was convinced would only just be figments of my daydreams. That is something I can’t even put into words how much it means to me. Especially now, as we approach another shift in our lifestyle with our little girl due any day now.

I’m not too far away from being able to indulge in some of my favorite wine again. One of the reasons I absolutely love Wente Wine is because of their story. It’s yet another significant reminder of why self-employment is such a magical thing. The Wente family’s story began in 1883, when German immigrant, C.H. Wente immigrated to America with the dream of creating a better life. Five generations later Wente is still the oldest continuously-operated, family-owned winery in the country. Their wines are 100% estate grown and sustainably farmed in the Livermore Valley, San Francisco Bay and Arroyo Secco.
